Art making has been an endless inquiry of how my interior life influences my art and how the environment influences my interior life”

In the Virgin Islands I worked for screen printing artist Jim Tillett. Eventually he let me work in the studio; where I passed paint through multiple screens over long tables of fabric or canvas; each screen layering depth, interest, pattern and color. Recently I learned that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis used the Tillett family textiles for her home decor. The Tillett fabrics were my first initiation into realizing art as functional, a vehicle to enhance our daily lives with beauty.

Studying drawing with the artist Jim Morphesis taught me to engage fearlessly with themes of the self, life, death, myth, and spirituality. Although his work can be seen in museums, he is also well known as the subject of Kent Twitchell’s 101 Freeway murals, benignly bringing art to thousands of people driving by.

In my role as Digital Literacy Specialist at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) my journey as an artist was influenced by the rich history LACMA has had supporting art and technology with their Art + Tech Lab. Technology frees us, whether it be paint put in tubes allowing the impressionist painters to paint outdoors, Georgia O’Keefe influenced by photography resulting in abstracting the natural world, or David Hockney’s iPad; technology expands our literacy and continues a tradition of democratizing mark making.

My work includes drawing, painting with acrylics, photography, and digital painting. Each piece a reflection of the conversations we are continuously engaged in with our environment. It is these conversations that shape us, support who we are or who we want to be.
